Rogue Waves

Release date

March 13, 2013

It’s been almost three years since the Big Friendly Giant (SVK) started its restless wandering. The self-titled debut album got lots of praises and the band have spent their time playing a lot live and working on new music. The EP Rogue Waves is the result of a weekend of unrestrained improvisation and jamming in NTNU’s studio in Trondheim. SVK started out with three musicians who studied Music Technology at the prestigious university NTNU. “Rogue Waves is the band’s first release after we expanded from trio to quartet,” explains guitarist Claus Sohn Andersen. “Amund Ulvestad is officially enrolled with his cello and his synths, and helps SVK take a musical step forward.”

Håkon Nybø (bass), Kristian Mäkinen (drums), Claus Sohn Andersen (guitar) and Amund Ulvestad (cello, synth) have once again utilized NTNU’s studio in Trondheim for the recording of their second release. “We have our roots in the 70s progressive music and post-rock,” explains Sohn Andersen. “We might lean a little more towards the progressive part this time, but there are still characteristics of ambient, jazz, electronica and experimental music that we implement with the sound that people recognize as SVK’s own, “says Sohn Andersen.

Rogue Waves is mixed and mastered by the band themselves, and the cover art was made by Tom Rhyland / Unmutual Illustration.
