The work Hjarahljóð is a set of chorals composed for the historically oriented game The Frostrune. The creators of The Frostrune having a main focus on historical correctness in the development of the game, wanted music which was as close to historically correct as possible. For this they contacted Alexander K. Lykke a singer and musician who also has an academic background and professional experience in Old Norse language and philology.
While we have few sources for the music of the Scandinavian Viking Age, we have good knowledge about the lyrical texts of the time, and of the language itself. Thus, Alexander composed lyrics only in Old Norse, and only in the historically authentic poetic metre, fornyrðislag, held to be one of the oldest lyrical meters. The story of The Frostrune is set in the early Viking Age, and thus the oldest metre is fitting. Additionally, the voice and a simple drum are the only instruments used, being instruments we know must have been known to Scandinavians in the 8th century.
